Anxiety & Depression Counselling

Anxiety and depression can affect many areas of life, including your mood, relationships, work, sleep, motivation and how you feel about yourself. Sometimes these difficulties develop gradually, while at other times they may be connected to stressful experiences, significant changes or difficult periods in life.

I provide counselling and psychotherapy for adolescents and adults experiencing anxiety, depression and related difficulties. Therapy is collaborative and tailored to your individual needs, with face-to-face appointments available in Moonee Ponds and telehealth appointments Australia-wide.

Understanding Depression & Anxiety

Anxiety and depression are common mental health difficulties, but they can look and feel different for each person. They can occur separately or together, and their impact can range from relatively mild difficulties through to significant disruption in everyday life.

Anxiety may involve excessive worry, feeling on edge, difficulty relaxing, physical symptoms of anxiety, panic, avoidance or becoming caught in patterns of overthinking. You may find yourself anticipating what could go wrong or avoiding situations because of the discomfort they create.

Depression can involve persistent low mood, reduced motivation or enjoyment, fatigue, changes in sleep or appetite, difficulties concentrating, withdrawing from others, or feelings of hopelessness, guilt or worthlessness.

You don't need to have a formal diagnosis of anxiety or depression to seek counselling. Therapy can help us understand what is contributing to the difficulties you're experiencing and identify ways of responding that are meaningful and practical for you.

How I Work With Anxiety & Depression

There is no single approach that works for everyone experiencing anxiety or depression. I work collaboratively with you to understand what may be contributing to your difficulties, the patterns that may be keeping them going and what you would like to change.

Therapy may involve developing practical strategies for managing anxiety or low mood, exploring patterns of thinking and behaviour, improving emotional regulation, working with avoidance, developing greater psychological flexibility, or exploring experiences that may be contributing to how you feel in the present.

My approach is integrative and may draw on evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and, where appropriate, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Therapy is tailored to your individual circumstances, preferences and goals rather than following the same approach for everyone.

What Can Counselling Help With?

Anxiety and depression can affect people in many different ways. Counselling can provide support with the symptoms themselves as well as the experiences, behaviours and patterns that may be contributing to them.

  • Excessive worry and overthinking

  • Persistent low mood or sadness

  • Stress and feeling overwhelmed

  • Panic and physical symptoms of anxiety

  • Avoidance and fears

  • Reduced motivation or enjoyment

  • Low self-esteem and self-criticism

  • Difficulties with sleep or concentration

  • Perfectionism and high personal expectations

  • Social anxiety

  • Difficulties adjusting to life changes

  • Relationship or interpersonal stress

  • Feelings of hopelessness or being stuck

  • Developing coping and emotional regulation strategies

You don't need to identify with all of these experiences to seek support. We can focus on the difficulties that are most relevant to you and what you would like to be different in your life.
